Now, over 200 years later on, we're happy to invite you back into our house on Lower Water Street, the Alexander Keith's Nova Scotia Brewery. Alexander Keith's is a brewery in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. It belongs to Anheuser-Busch InBev, a holdings company based in Leuven, Belgium, which owns over 400 beer brands worldwide. The brewery was founded in 1820 by Alexander Keith who had actually immigrated from Scotland three years formerly. In 1928, the business was offered to Oland Brewery, which was in turn sold to the Labatt Brewing Company. Following a number of mergers and acquisitions, Labatt's is now part of Anheuser-Busch InBev.
Considering that 1928, parent business kept the brand name alive, and by the 1990s Alexander Keith's India Pale Ale (IPA) was the most popular beer in Nova Scotia. A variety of other designs is likewise marketed. Although Alexander Keith items were originally produced in the Halifax brewery only for sale in the Maritimes, they are now produced at Anheuser-Busch InBev plants across Canada and America.
Archived recipes for beer made by the Alexander Keith's Brewery in the early 1900s show high levels of hopping, with big all-malt mash active ingredients and no use of corn, common for beers of that time. In contrast, the modern beer marketed as Alexander Keith's IPA is only 5% alcohol by volume and lightly hopped, which does not meet the accepted requirements for an India pale ale. At the 2016 Canadian Brewing Awards, Alexander Keith's IPA won 3rd place, not in the IPA category, but in the "North American Style Blonde or Golden Ale" classification.
Keith Hall is a three-storey sandstone and brick building fronting on Hollis Street in downtown Halifax, Nova Scotia. The north side of the structure is joined with a contemporary brick business structure. Located behind and downslope from Keith Hall is the Brewery which is a complex of 2, three and four-storey ironstone and brick storage facilities organized around an interior yard and facing Lower Water Street and the Halifax harbour beyond. The interior yard was converted into a glazed atrium in the early 1980s as part of a significant adaptive re-use task. Both Keith Hall and the Brewery complex are prominent buildings in this part of downtown Halifax.
