Apostille Certificate

Verify the authenticity of your notarized document for use abroad

Sometimes a document notarized in Canada will be accepted for use in a foreign jurisdiction without any further proof of authenticity. However, many times the foreign authority will require that the document be apostilled before it can be used there. As of January 11, 2024 there is a new process in Canada for obtaining an apostille certificate.

Unless your document has been issued by a federal or provincial government, you will first need to have your document notarized. For those in Nova Scotia the next step is to send the notarized document by mail to Global Affairs Canada.

The address is:

Global Affairs Canada
Authentication Services Section (JLAC)
125 Sussex Drive
Ottawa, ON K1A 0G2

You need to follow the instructions here under the section called "Sending your request by mail or courier". Global Affairs Canada officials will then return the documents to you with the apostille certificate. There is no fee for this service.
